Inbuilt load balancer
Enhance your web security while optimizing traffic with a built-in load balancer in our Web Application Firewall
What is an Inbuilt load balancer?
An inbuilt load balancer is a device or a software-based service that efficiently distributes network or application traffic across a number of servers.
This dispersal of loads enhances system resilience, ensures optimal system performance, prevents any single server from being overwhelmed with too much traffic, and increases the availability and redundancy of applications. Load balancing is essential for high-traffic websites and mission-critical applications as it aids in preventing unnecessary server overloads.
How it Works?
The load balancer operates as a “traffic cop”, directing client requests across multiple servers in such a manner that maximizes speed and capacity utilization, while making sure no single server is overwhelmed. If a server fails, the load balancer redirects the traffic to the remaining functional servers.
Advantages of having a web application firewall (WAF) that comes with an inbuilt load balancer
- High Performance: Having a built-in load balancer with a WAF, like Load Balancer integrated with Modshield SB (WAF), allows you to define routing rules based on content. This can span multiple instances, supporting HTTP/2 and WebSocket while also providing additional visibility.
- Improved Scalability: Incorporating a solution that combines a load balancer and WAF can enhance your application’s scalability. The load balancer efficiently distributes traffic across available servers, improving the capacity of existing servers.
- Enhanced Security: Contrary to a network firewall, a WAF with an integrated load balancer offers effective protection at the application level. While network firewalls provide the first line of defense, WAFs complement this protection at the application layer.
- Lower cost and easy maintenance: Compared to dedicated hardware defenses, an integrated load balancer and WAF solution are both less expensive and less demanding to maintain. Such solutions help eliminate single points of failure, minimize the attack surface, and make it harder for resources to be exhausted and links to be saturated.
Types of Load Balancer
There are two main types of load balancing: network (or transport) load balancing and application (or content) load balancing.
-
Network Load Balancing (NLB): NLB uses a networking protocol as the metric for allocating traffic. The most common strategies involve directing traffic based on the number of connections or the least network usage.
-
Application Load Balancing (ALB): ALB distributes traffic in line with application-specific contents, such as HTTP headers, cookies, or data.
Benefits of a Load Balancer
- Enhanced application reliability by redistributing traffic when a server malfunctions.
- Improved application performance by evenly distributing client requests across several server nodes.
- Facilitates server maintenance without downtime as the load balancer can redirect traffic to other servers.
- Boosts data security as it can provide SSL encryption to servers that might not be able to perform encryption natively.
